At the present time, the technological possibilities are so far exhausted that within the basic concept prescribed, no appreciable further increase of the bandwidth is possible. Video tape recorders with the usual, analog recording principle influence not only the transfer quality by the limited electrical bandwidth, but also the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) , since they produce an additional noise component. If in the case of X-ray TV, the usual highgrade recorders using I-in. magnetic tape are assumed, then under normal circumstances the additional noise is less than the corresponding quantum noise already contained in the noise proportion of the signal to be recorded, so that no visible deterioration arises.
Modifications such as the subtraction of end diastolic and end systolic frames may provide some functional information (Kruger et al. 1979), but this can also be obtained by dynamic viewing of normal subtraction images obtained at these cardiac phases. Remaining imperfections in the registration of background structures of the subtracted images are the main source of subtraction artifacts. The simple shifting of one of the images before subtraction by interactively determined amounts may reduce these artifacts in many cases.
This type of image processing is not only significant for visual image evaluation - in order to make the morphological information more conspicuous - but can also be a preliminary stage for subsequent quantitative evaluation, as in the case of temporal or material-selective filtering .
