It was also established to “develop systemic approaches to increase the representation and advancement of women in academic science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers, thereby contributing to the development of a more diverse science and engineering workforce.

As a Canadian, the undergraduate education he received focused strictly on science and mathematics for four years. Despite the reservations of his family, who would have preferred he pursue a career in business, he attended graduate school in physics at a private Northeastern research I institution in the United States. Basically he did not like the situation there in the physics department. Although he liked the students, there was little interaction between the faculty and the students. He decided that he wanted to be neither in theoretical high-energy physics nor academia.
