A general tendency of film scholars of the Western is to highlight the genre’s role in making sense of national and cultural identity; it is clear that viewing Brokeback Mountain as a queer Western becomes an important strategy in writing homosexuality in to that history. The mythological narrative has regulated out of its story any notion of homosexuality in the West even as such myths are characterised by an overinvestment in all-male kinship. 12 Indeed, the film explodes the hitherto repressed relations between multiple male samesex configurations and their place in national mythmaking.

There is no uniform story as to how an independent film fares under a studio-backed production regime and it is arguably too early for succinct historical periodisation; there are both good and bad stories. The benefits to independent cinema through the classics divisions are open to debate and speculation. Independent films are being invested in and heavily promoted, distributed and exhibited to a wider audience than ever before, allowing audiences to appreciate and develop a taste for indie films of popular acclaim such as Little Miss Sunshine (Dayton and Faris, 2006).

Brokeback’s splendour is visually and thematically figured in opposition to the bleak claustrophobia and drain of small town family life. Other critics, however, interpret the same construction of the wilderness in different ways. 31 The paradox of reading Brokeback Mountain’s backdrop of visual grandeur as potentially representing both freedom and isolation problematises Kitses’s own earlier antinomies. Wilderness versus civilisation, as the film makes clear, is never a straightforward opposition between a liberating freedom and depressive restriction typical of the Western as both antimonies bring with them a slew of problems primarily associated with the men’s closeted status.
