In section two I examine six contemporary responses within social philosophy to the problem of normative foundations.

Each of the essays that have been discussed thus far, whilst explicitly pointing to the limits of Habermas’ formulations of politics, aesthetics, and nature, implicitly direct our attention to the way he has internalised the linguistic turn in twentieth-century philosophy. The essays by Albrecht Wellmer, Dieter Freundlieb, Dieter Henrich, Manfred Frank, Kenneth MacKendrick, and John Rundell all critically encounter Habermas’ version of this turn, as well as signal departures from it.
